09 Feb DDoS Attacks: Growing in Frequency
Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are starting to become more commonplace in the past year. Part of the increase in attacks is contributed to the growing number of unsavory groups out there whose primary objective is to see whether they can actually take down a website.
The software used to initiate attacks has also become easier to obtain. Some groups are even starting to exploit the vulnerabilities in Internet of Things (IoT) devices and use these to attack various websites.
One of the bigger attacks so far this year was the New Year’s attack on the BBC. Some speculate that, at that time, it was one of the largest DDoS attacks against a single website. Supposedly, according to New World Hacking—the group claiming responsibility for the attack—it was only a test. In a news release, the group also had claimed it has attacked Donald Trump’s website.
Another major attack against multiple websites was the DDoS attack against DYN back on October 21, 2016. DYN has servers situated all throughout the United States and provides rerouting services for numerous organizations, including the New York Times, Amazon, Netflix, Airbnb, Twitter, and Spotify.
The attack started on the East Coast and quickly spread westward. During this attack, it was discovered that IoT devices were being used to coordinate the attack against DYN’s servers, which managed to make numerous sites inaccessible.
